Plastic packaging gives a positive contribution on the rapid development of food industry due to its irreplaceable position for other packaging materials currently because of its good waterproof ability, strength, airtightness, visibility, printability and low cost. Meanwhile, plastics is denounced by the people and even many plastics banned policies are carried out by the govt. in many countries and districts because the fact that the ordinary plastics or degradable plastics especially degradable plastic bags made from starch batch would create “white pollution” to the environment. Is it possible to find a good way to clean up its “guilt” of creating the “white pollution” for us to use the advantages of plastic packaging as we like?

The New Zealand owned company Qingdao Kiwi Bio-Plastic Company Limited has introduced “Reverte” oxo-biodegradable plastic additives into China (the domestic trademark for it is “LEWEIDI”). It was developed and made by Wells Plastics Limited in the U.K. Plastic packaging added with this type of additive would be 100% biodegraded into CO2, water and biomass within one or two years normally after being thrown into the landfill and it could also maintain the good physical properties and shelf life of the plastics before it is thrown out. This revolutionary technology innovation has eliminated the embarrassment of other degradable plastic technologies which will always scarify the good physical properties of plastics or could not ensure its shelf life and functions. This technology not only helps plastics to maintain its good reputation of being one of the great inventions in the 21 st centuries and also helps plastics to “kick” the “cap” of “white pollution” creating on it into the rubbish tin which should belong to the history already.

 

The additives have passed the approval under FDA food contact regulations and EC food contact directives of “2002/72/EC” and also have passed the SGS certifying. Therefore it solves the safety problem caused by other technologies such as starch degradable plastics, biodegradable plastics like PLA, PCL. The additives can be widely used into many types of plastics materials such as LDPE, HDPE, PP, CPP, BOPP, EVA and NYLON to make biodegradable plastic films, bags, boxes and food trays etc. This technology has solved the problem of how to harmonize the food packaging application of plastics and environmental caring, which confuses many people. In addition, the additives are very easy to use just like adding color masterbatches. Normally 1% of the additives by weight would be sufficient to be added into the raw materials. The cost increased is very little also. And the cost added is next to nothing if comparing to the loss caused by the pollution for the environment and soil by using the ordinary plastics packaging.

 

Currently this technology becomes more and more welcomed and is popularly used by many manufacturers because its 100% oxo-biodegradability, food contactability, stable shelf life and its reliable maintenance of the physical properties of plastics. It has become the best choice for many food enterprises to meet the international green purchasing requirement that “plastic packaging must be totally biodegradable”.
